![]() ![]() Here is information on using the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS). Here is information on using the United States National Grid (USNG). Here is information on using the Universal Transverse Mercator coordinates (UTM). Here is a tutorial on using this type of tool. Using a slot style tool to plot/measure a 10m MGRS position Part Id: RoundGTAQuads, Made in United States, UPC: 824249150490 Large Print, Compass Rose in 90 Degree Quadrants Part Id: SuperGTA, Made in United States, UPC: 824249150063 Improved Military Style UTM/MGRS Coordinate Scale Part Id: RoundGTA, Made in United States, UPC: 824249150490 Round Military Coordinate Scale and Protractor Part Id: UTMSlot-TA, Made in United States, UPC: 824249000764 Part Id: GridsSheet, Made in United States, UPC: 824249000849 Locating Coordinate Grid Information on USGS Maps It's the size of a music CD, so it tucks away in more storage spaces.Larger 1:50,000 and 1:100,000 scale rulers for maps with wider grid spacing.Includes 1:24,000 scale for USGS 7.5 minute topographic maps.Rounded corners keep it from wearing holes in your pockets. It's 33% thicker than the standard military issue version, so it's less likely to be bent or broken when you need to use it. The tool is printed on plastic stock about the thickness and stiffness of a credit card, with a protective coating. ![]() Our coordinate scales offer significant benefits over the standard issue GTA 5-2-12: This makes reading the compass rose easier and also keeps the tool from "disappearing" when you place it on the map. The inner protractor is marked in degrees and the outer protractor is in mils.īands of white ink are printed under the two compass roses. Plus, the overall dimensions of the tool have been reduced so that it is the size of a music CD, easily fitting into a pocket or any slot where you could store a CD. The 1:100,000 scale now spans 5km grid lines, making it much more usable. The tool features several additional map scales, including 1:24,000, which is the most common topographic map scale found within the United States. By using a slot on one side of the tool for access to the map, the tool can be more compact than the traditional GTA tool. This tool is an improved version of the Graphic Training Aid 5-2-12 Coordinate Scale and Protractor used by United States and NATO military forces around the world. Neither the red lines, colored background, nor map image are printed on the actual tool. This coordinate value describes the southwest corner of the 10- meter square in which you’re target is located.Note: Product edges and interior cutouts are shown with a thin red line. Then, read the values indicated on the plotter, in this case 89300478. You slide it along that line until the plotter’s vertical axis lines up with the X. Using your plotter to locate your target within a 10-meter square, you line up the plotter’s horizontal axis with the 04 northing line. Your target is therefore located in the 1,000-meter square identified as 8904. The closest northing line to the south of your target is 04. The closest easting line to the west of your target’s location is 89. Once again, start at the bottom left of the map, and READ RIGHT UP. Reading the plotter, your coordinates are 88240450 Plot Map Coordinates - Plotting Point B To do so, place the horizontal axis of the 1:25,000-scale plotter on the 04 northing line, as shown, moving it until the vertical axis lines up with the targeted X. So, now you’ve located your target within a one kilometer square, now use the plotter to locate it within a 10-meter square. The intersection of these two lines (8804) puts you at the southwest corner of the 1,000 meter square containing your target location. Next, go up that easting line until you come to the closest northing line to the south of your target location, in this case 04. Remember, the coordinate itself does not pinpoint the target, but simply describes the southwest corner of the 10-meter square in which the target lies. In this case, our plotted coordinates will locate our targets within a 10-meter square. We’ll plot three targeted points: A, B, and C. Once you understand the UTM and MGRS grid systems, and know how to use one plotter, you can pretty easily figure out how to use most other plotters. There are civilian plotters available in other scales, such as 1:24,000. In these examples, we’ll be using a “blank map” with a 1:25,000 grid. This format can be used to exchange Military Map Overlays with. The Military Map Overlays is saved in the MilX format. You can draw on the active layer using the Symbol Edit functions on the right side of the window. All layers are visible and one of the layers is in edit mode (active). This tool is designed to work with the military’s 1:25,000-scale maps, as well as the 1:50,000 and 1:100,000 maps. One or more Military Map Overlays can be added in the App. Let's see now how to plot map coordinates using a military protractor. Announcement: My online Land Navigation course includes four hours of video instruction, and two downloadable PDF books, all for about the same price as a typical paperback book. ![]()
