The Gang-gang Cockatoo, or Gang Gang for short, is a small, stocky cockatoo with a wispy crest, large, broad wings and a short tail. Now I know why I tend to choose 'small' families. I'm fairly sure this particular bit of parrot taxonomy has changed since I saw it - I just haven't had a chance to figure out what the species is called now! Find out more about this, the largest temperate woodlands in the world here. Finally, a list that I can do! (Because the taxonomy - for the moment, fingers crossed - is actually straightforward.) Forty-seven for me going to Australia really, really helps, as you can see. Their tail bands are a solid scarlet red.īoth Carnaby’s and Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos can be found in the Great western Woodlands. Young males emerge from the nest three months after hatching looking like their mothers but as they mature at about three years of age, their pure black adult feathers emerge. Their tails are like the colours of the sunset from yellow, orange to red. Females’ bodies are covered in black feathers edged in gold while their heads carry yellow spots. The highly decorative plumage of the Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo make it a favourite amongst bird watchers. Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos are also declining due to urban expansion. They are more talkative than the other cockatoos. Yes, they are big and require quite expensive cages, but also be prepared for lots of noises. They are beautiful but not the best choice for a pet. This migratory species is declining rapidly due to the loss of around 87% of its woodland breeding habitat and as a result is listed as endangered. Major Mitchell’s cockatoo reaches 20-24 inches and weighs over 2 pounds. This includes the endangered Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo of south-west Western Australia. Six Australian species are predominantly black. ![]()
